The Partnership for Learning and Skills to Advance Safer Engineering in East Africa (PLEASE) Project, funded by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, successfully hosted its Stakeholder Review and Validation Workshop for Short Courses on Digital and Green Skills from June 25th–26th, 2026, in Eldoret.
The event marked a major milestone in aligning academic training with the rapidly evolving needs of East Africa’s maritime and energy industries.

Key Highlights:
Official Opening: Prof. Kiplagat Kotut (Acting Vice-Chancellor, Moi University) officially opened the workshop, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to regional capacity building, alongside remarks from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Eldoret (UoE).
Strategic Project Roadmap: Project Principal Investigator (PI) and Dean of the School of Engineering, Prof. Augustine Makokha, delivered a comprehensive project overview mapping out the critical digital and green skills required across the region.
Keynote Address: Eng. Grace L. Onyango (Ag. Registrar, Engineers Board of Kenya) delivered a powerful keynote highlighting the Skills Capability Index as a vital tool for workforce readiness and emphasizing Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for modern engineers.

The workshop brought together key industry regulators and heavyweights: including the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), REREC, KenGen, Kenya Power and partner universities; to validate training programs and short courses designed to bridge critical competency gaps.
By directly aligning curricula with real-world demands, the PLEASE Project continues to empower East Africa’s engineering workforce to lead safer, cleaner and more efficient operations.
