Implementation of the Partnership for Learning & Skills to Advance Safer Engineering in East Africa (PLEASE) project took center stage today during a strategic review meeting between Moi University’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kiplagat Kotut, and Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director, Captain William K. Ruto.
The meeting focused on reviewing progress and expanding the scope of the PLEASE initiative, which serves as the primary framework for aligning university engineering programs with the practical needs of the region’s maritime industry.
Designed to address critical skill gaps, the PLEASE project is currently leading capacity-building programs for KPA staff in emerging green technologies including Hydrogen and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG); alongside modern smart port systems. The initiative also supports applied research aimed at improving port operational efficiency, leveraging data innovation to safeguard coastal biodiversity and placing young marine engineering graduates into structured apprenticeships.
Through the ongoing project implementation, the collaboration delivers four key outcomes for higher education and industry integration:
- Applied Research & Consultancy: University faculty gain direct access to conduct industry-relevant research and offer specialized consultancy on live port challenges.
- Student Industrial Attachments: Engineering students secure structured internships and practical training across KPA facilities nationwide.
- Technology Transfer: A joint framework enables the commercialization and deployment of new maritime innovations developed through university research.
- Professional Workforce Development: Moi University designs and delivers tailored technical training programs for KPA staff across its operations.
By placing practical skill development and green technology at the center of the agenda, the PLEASE project continues to strengthen institutional ties while supporting the growth of a safer, more sustainable blue economy in East Africa.
